The chemical industry encompasses a wide range of manufacturers, each producing distinct types of chemicals or products that serve various spheres and sectors.
Chemical companies operate in complex environments where safety is a critical concern. Significant attention is paid to handling and processing hazardous materials, but workers at heights must also be protected from falls and injury. Whether performing maintenance on rooftops or accessing elevated tanks and equipment, fall protection systems, such as guardrails, anti-slip walkways, and safe access platforms, help safeguard workers and enhance operational efficiency.

Guardrails
The inside of a chemical plant is dedicated to handling, processing, and packaging machinery, so critical building services systems, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), fire suppression, backup power, and communications equipment, are often located on the rooftop. These systems require frequent inspections and maintenance, exposing workers to significant hazards, including environmental conditions.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) specifies that any work area with a fall hazard over four feet must have appropriate fall protection. Roof edge guardrails provide the first line of defense against falls when workers need to access rooftops or elevated structures. According to OSHA, guardrails must have a top rail height of 42 inches (+/- 3 inches) above the walking-working surface. They must withstand (without failure) a force of at least 200 lbs. (890 kN) applied outward or downward everywhere along the top rail.
Guardrails must be robust, durable, and corrosion-resistant in a chemical manufacturing environment. To this end, anodized aluminum or galvanized steel safety railing systems should be used. Aluminum is the preferred choice for saltwater or harsher environments. A modular, component-based guardrail system is easily configured to the roof’s layout and installed without welding or penetrating the roof’s surface.
Roof perimeter guardrails provide “collective” fall protection. They safeguard multiple workers without needing personal fall protective equipment (e.g., harness, lanyard, anchor), the required specialized training, and frequent inspections of the equipment.

Walkways
Whether navigating the rooftop or other elevated areas in a chemical plant, a modular walkway system is designed to provide safe passage in and around high-risk zones. These systems can be customized to fit a chemical plant’s unique layout and operational needs and ensure workers can move freely without risking injury.
They feature glass-reinforced nylon treads to provide an anti-slip surface and are also self-draining to prevent water, snow, or ice accumulation. Secured in aluminum or galvanized steel frames, they offer a stable, non-bounce walking surface that eliminates direct foot traffic on the roof or other areas. This reduces wear on the roof and prolongs its lifecycle. Walkway systems can also be fitted with guardrails for added fall protection.

Platforms
Combining the treads used in walkways with OSHA-compliant guardrails, safe access platforms offer a versatile, adaptable way to protect workers at height throughout a chemical plant. Anti-slip walkway treads are set in frames (aluminum or galvanized steel) to form secure steps and stable platform decks. Guardrails extend from the frames and give workers the confidence to perform their tasks with optimum freedom of movement. Self-closing safety gates can be added to protect workers at stair access openings. The gates feature a spring-loaded mechanism that closes automatically once the worker passes through.
With its modular, pipe-fitted design, safe access platforms can be adapted to the work area or station and can be reconfigured if the needs of the facility or tasks change. Various types of platforms can be used in chemical plants:
- Static (fixed) platforms are ideal for specific or frequently performed tasks.
- Mobile platforms are equipped with heavy-duty locking casters for station-to-station portability that is safer, more versatile, and more productive than ladders.
- Multi-purpose platforms can be fabricated for adjustable height capability.
- HVAC and generator platforms are specifically designed to maintain building services equipment on the ground floor or rooftop.
- Hopper and dump trailer stands provide safe access to large trailers for transporting raw materials and finished products.
