Rigid Rail System for Safe Aircraft Maintenance Access

Project Overview

A global leader in loading dock and industrial facility solutions recently completed the construction of a new aircraft hangar. With a focus on safety and operational efficiency, the company required a comprehensive fall protection system that would allow their maintenance team to safely access all areas of the aircraft during servicing and inspections.

The Challenge

As the hangar was being built, the customer identified a serious fall risk for maintenance crews needing to work on top of airplanes. Traditional access methods were not sufficient for ensuring safety at height, especially over large and complex aircraft surfaces. They needed a system that could provide continuous overhead fall protection, accommodate multiple users, and remain compliant with strict safety standards.

The Solution

Lighthouse Safety was brought in as a subcontractor by the construction company managing the hangar build. In the early stages of the project, the Lighthouse team met with stakeholders to review the equipment layout and safety requirements. A site visit was conducted to evaluate the hangar’s structure, workflow, and access points.

Based on this assessment, a rigid rail fall protection system with a trussed track design was recommended and selected. This solution offered reliable overhead anchorage while maintaining a clear and functional workspace below.

The Benefits

  • Proven Expertise: Lighthouse demonstrated deep experience in fall protection for aircraft maintenance facilities.
  • Multi-User Support: Safely accommodates 1 to 6 users at a time.
  • Versatility: Tracked system spans from 6 to 100 feet, fitting a range of hangar layouts.
  • Durability: Hot-dip galvanized components and Teflon-sealed trolleys ensure long-term, smooth performance.
  • Low Maintenance: Systems often provide over 25 years of service with minimal upkeep.
  • Compliance: Meets OSHA 1910, ANSI Z359.6, and CSA Z259.2 standards for engineered fall protection.
