OSHA Fall Protection Update
In January 2017, OSHA updated the 1910 Walking-Working Surfaces Standard to improve fall protection across general industry. The changes reflect modern safety technology and practices and are expected to prevent 29 deaths and nearly 6,000 injuries annually.
Key Requirements:
By Nov 18, 2036: All existing ladders must retrofit to compliant systems; cages will no longer qualify.
Training (by May 17, 2017): Workers must be trained on fall hazards and equipment use.
Anchor Inspections (by Nov 20, 2017): Permanent rope descent anchors must be inspected and certified.
Fixed Ladders Over 24 Feet:
By Nov 19, 2018: New ladders must use ladder safety or personal fall arrest systems (not cages).
